Feline retro platformer game for PC
Cartridge the Tiger is a premium adventure game for PC coming from developer Protosprite. It's a 2D platformer featuring retro graphics and takes direct inspiration from the cult classic Super Mario games for its gameplay and presentation. In it, players control a tiger and they will take on all kinds of platforming challenges.
In the same vein as games like Pizza Tower and Bread & Fred, Cartridge the Tiger combines charming graphics with precision platforming that players of all ages can play and enjoy. The game has an easy-to-use mod support using C# and Steam Workshop integration.
Some old, some new
Cartridge the Tiger is basically a cross between a precision platformer and a sandbox playset similar to Mario Maker. In the game, you play as the titular Cartridge, a tiger on a quest to save a friend that will have you experience the main story mode campaign across 10 levels. Take on all kinds of traps and hostile creatures as you run through multiple environments to accomplish your rescue mission.
It's after you go through the main campaign that things get more interesting as this is an adventure game that was meant to be tinkered with. Pick from over 200 objects and more than 25 types of enemies to design your levels. You can keep it simple with slopes and cosmetic decorations or complex with puzzles that require all sorts of switches and logic blocks.
What's more, it boasts seamless integration with Steam Workshop which makes it easier to know about updates, as well as share your work with other players online. Though the game was just recently released, developers have made updates to the controls, making them less floaty and less slippery. This shows commitment on the developer’s side to continuously improve the game.
As close as you can get
If you're a fan of Nintendo's popular Mario Maker series and want to have a similar experience for PC, Cartridge the Tiger is the closest one yet to replicate the same fun gameplay and freedom of creativity. Suffice it to say, this is a release that should not be missed. However, to mod the game some technical know-how is required.
